That his character can be twisted to either side of the good/evil spectrum and that he can be sarcastic, mean, repentant, angry, sympathetic, motivated by greed, by fear or by love and still be (somewhat) in character to his official canon-ness makes him a truly useful and enjoyable character for fanfiction.
